History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day is the day to pay tribute and honor to American soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the US in World War 1. Finally, it ended with an armistice, also known as a peace agreement between Germany and the Allied Nations, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (November).
This day was commemorated the following year on November 11 as Armistice Day. The day was specifically intended to remind the nation to seek peaceful relations with one another.

By 1954, United States survived two major wars, World War l, and the Korean War. During WW ll, the nation realized one of the greatest mobilizations in the history of the U.S Army, Marines, Navy, and Air Force (more than sixteen million peoples). Amongst these people, about .7 million served in the Korean War in 1950. The 83rd Congress decided to reinstate Armistice Day as Veterans Day. It was intended to honor the veterans of all U.S wars.
On June 1, 1954, President Eisenhower signed the legislation. However, this special day hasn’t always been celebrated on a specific date. The Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three days weekends in 1968 for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays, including Columbus Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
The bill assigned the 4th Monday of October as Veterans Day. However, despite the approval of various states who decided to continue to celebrate this holiday on its original day.
Veterans Day Celebrations
President Gerald R. Ford realized that the importance of the actual date of Veterans Day has historical and patriotic value for all Americans, especially veterans who deserved to be honored. It was 1978 when the President of the United States of America signed a new law to return Veterans Day back to November 11. In case November 11 falls on a weekend, the holiday will be celebrated on the previous Friday or Monday, respectively.
Veterans Day VS. Memorial Day
Although both days are celebrated to pay tribute to the Armed forces, the dates are different with purpose.
Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May. This is the national holiday to pay tribute to those military men who died while serving their country.
This federal holiday is designated as the day to honor those who served in the military on November 11 of every year. Veterans day includes both dead and alive military men from all Armed forces.
